  History

On June 30, 1954, the newly formed Our Lady of Fatima Parish was begun to serve the Catholic families of the lakes region in southeastern Jackson county. Members from the Michigan Center area as well as Napoleon, Brooklyn, Grass Lake, and as far as Jerome began to worship together at the new parish.

After almost six years, ground was finally broken on April 3, 1960 for the new school. After blessing the ground, Father Paul V. Donovan, pastor since 1959, turned the first piece of sod where the future Our Lady of Fatima School would be constructed. In May, 154 potential students were registered to enroll in the new school in September. The Sisters of St. Joseph at Nazareth sent three sisters from their community to administer and staff the new school. The doors opened to receive the very first Fatima students on September 7, 1960. The school cafeteria began serving hot lunches the following January. The cost of a homemade hot lunch was $.30. Over the years the enrollment soared to 252 students with the addition of new classrooms in 1965. From the very beginning, the tradition of parental involvement through many hours of volunteer service has helped provide a solid Catholic education at an affordable cost for area children.

In Fall, 1970, the newly-formed Jackson Catholic Middle School opened its doors consolidating the areas' seventh- and eighth-grade classes into one building. Fatima was now a first- through sixth-grade school with 169 students. On July 15, 1972, Rev. Andrew J. Dunne, OSFS became associate pastor and in 1974 succeeded Rev. Paul Gillespie as pastor. He remains in this position today. Rev. Thomas Smith is the associate pastor.

Today Our Lady of Fatima is home to 90 students in Pre-Kindergarten through Sixth-grade. The long-held tradition of parent involvement continues to support and enhance the faith-based educational experience of the students. Fatima has a staff of five lay teachers assisted by two teachers aides and two part-time teachers providing instruction in library and Spanish.
